Carl gave away weight and experience in his first bout and won by stoppage in 1min30 seconds of round 1.
carl didnt really get going after giving his opponent 2 counts out of 3 knockdowns and left the ring without breaking a sweat, he made up for this lifting pints afterwards!

Ron Balicki seminar at Team Phoenix 2010

Once again, Team Phoenix played host to the awesome Ron Balicki who travelled over from Los Angeles for a 2 day seminar in July.
As usual with Rons annual seminars here, the gym was packed out and this year was the biggest yet with over 70 people attending from all over the UK and Europe.
Day one of the seminar covered Jun Fan, Kali and Thai Boxing and day two covered Silat, Panantukan and Shoot wrestling.
Ron explains and demonstrates techniques with the ease you would expect from one of the greatest and most experienced martial artists in the world. He is also however, very good at breaking things down in order for people of any level to clearly understand.
He splits the techniques up then layers them in order for people to stay at a level they feel comfortable with whilst allowing them to advance if they want to.
Ron is a fantastic personality and a natural at creating a really good atmosphere in seminars. He has just so much knowledge to share. Its a true privilege to have him at Team Phoenix. The whole weekend was brilliant with lots of old friends making their way to Newcastle from across the UK and it was also a chance to welcome new people to the gym who had made the effort to travel a long way in order to train with Ron.
We had a typically mad Newcastle night out on the saturday too!
All in all an amazing weekend, roll on next year!

Luke wins in Teeside!

massive well done to Luke O'Neill who won his Thai Boxing debut last Sunday at the Teeside fight night at the Marton hotel and country club, promoted by Teeside Thai Boxing Club (Dave McRobb).
Luke won (split decision) after five very hard fought rounds.
He performed superbly as did his opponent Tom Evans (Faktory gym) considering it was their first fight. Well done Luke, we couldnt have asked for more from you, all your hard work paid off!

Good Luck to Peter Robinson

All at Team Phoenix are wishing Team Phoenix Instructor Peter "Peaches" Robinson the best of British as he tackles the Lightning 12 off road endurance run on Sunday. The Lightning 12 is a 10km circuit through the woodland and hill lined setting of Malvern hills. Pete will be running this grueling circuit for 12 solid hours! We at Phoenix know he will prevail and best all his personal challenges as Pete is super strong in mind and will never quit.
This run among many others is in preparation for Petes ultimate challenge of doing the Marathon des Sables in 2011. This is a 6 day 151 mile marathon across the Sahara desert and is considered the toughest foot race on the face of the earth.
If you would like to sponsor Pete for his Marathon des Sables please contact Team Phoenix.
All the best Peaches!

Bad Company Clinch and Elbows workshop

Bad Company Workshop 13th March 2010

Today, myself (Maz), Matt, John, Iain and Gary headed down to Bad Company Gym in Leeds as the fantastic Richard Smith was putting on a 3-hour clinch and elbow workshop.

The 3 hours flew by which is always a good sign. We worked mainly on the 3 basic footwork steps and turns and throws in the clinch and timing and positioning. Having trained privately with Richard for a few years now, we had briefly touched on some of the stuff before but there was loads of new techniques and just enough time to get the hang of each one properly.

I really hope Richard and Lisa put on more of these workshops!
